Knights of Pi Math Tournament
The Knights of Pi Math Tournament (KPMT) is an annual mathematics contest held at Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington. The contest is designed to provide an opportunity for students in grades 5-8 to demonstrate their learning in mathematics in a fun and challenging environment. Newport Math Club hosts this event to share its love of math with younger students in the community.
Contest Format & Topics
The contest challenges students in a variety of math levels, from algebra and geometry to probability, basic number theory, "mental math" (problems solved without pencil and paper), and even logic problems. Questions span a variety of difficulty levels to provide a challenge for more experienced competitors, while still offering an encouraging environment for the less experienced competitors. Tests from past years' meets are available online to help students prepare for future tournaments. Students compete individually in the morning, and then spend the rest of the day sharpening their teamwork by solving problems in teams of four. Top teams and individuals are recognized with awards, but all students receive certificates of participation.
History
The first annual KPMT tournament was held on May 16, 2009. In total, 105 students from 11 Washington schools competed. The contest was sponsored by Newport High School's math club, Tecplot, and KnowledgePoints, Inc.
The next KPMT tournament is scheduled for December 2009.
