Ken Smith (North Carolina politician)

Ken Smith is an American politician from Pender County, North Carolina. A member of the Republican Party, he has served on the board of the Pender County Schools board, as mayor of Atkinson, North Carolina, and as Pender County commissioner.

Life

Ken Smith worked formally at West Pender Middle School as a Career and Technical Education teacher and worked as a pastor at Atkinson Baptist Church.

Mayor of Atkinson

Smith ran for mayor for Atkinson, North Carolina in the 2017 Atkinson mayoral election and defeated his opponent Christie Halligan, receiving 61 votes against Halligan's 26 votes.

Smith became mayor in 2018. During his time as mayor, Atkinson was hit by hurricane Florence, which caused heavy flooding in Pender County. Smith participated in efforts to assist residence during the hurricane and spoke AbOUT Atkinson's recovery effort.

In June 2019, Smith resigned from his position as mayor of Atkinson, saying that serving as a mayor and a member of Pender County school board led him to step down.

Pender County Board of Education

Smith was elected for the Pender County Board of Education in 2018 the same year he was became mayor of Atkinson. He represented District 4 of Pender County. He was reelected in 2018 and served as a member of the board through August 2024

During his tenure as a member of the Pender County Schools Board, he was described as an advocate for students, parents, and educators and serve served as chair of the board before he resigned on August 13, 2024, in order to run for Pender County commissioner.

Pender County Commissioner

Smith ran for the Republican nomination for Pender County commissioner for district 4 where he defeated incumbent Jackie Newton in the Republican primary.

Smith won the election on November 5, 2024, against Demetrice A. Keith the Democratic nominee for pender County commissioner for district 4, with 68 percent of the vote.

Smith was sworn in on December 2, 2024. Later in December, he was elected for vice chair for the Board of Commissioners. Smith left the board in 2025 for a pending move to a different congregation.
