Kandy (rave)

Kandy is the rather descriptive term used by ravers to describe brightly coloured beads which are worn around the wrist or neck.

Kandy is usually spelled "kandy" due to the alliteration within the phrase Kandy Kids, although some regional spelling variations include candy, kandi and kandee.

Kandy has two main functions. The first is the visual effect that kandy CREATES. They are usually very bright day-glo colours chosen especially for the purpose of wearing to a party with consideration of the visual effects created when SomeOne dances wearing them while being illuminated by different types and colours of lights. The sequence of colours chosen will often appear jumbled and somewhat random but the beads are chosen to CONTRAST with other beads making them visually jump out. Some beads will be UV reactive and some will be glow in the dark.

The second function of kandy is a gift that a raver will give or swap with new friends they have just made, or when they find out some one has come to a rave for the first time. In the rave culture of certain countries this exchange will be with kandy always given from one arm but received on the other.

Someone who wears a lot of kandy, ie halfway up each arm, is known as a Kandy Kid or Kandy raver.
