KAL-Online (칼온라인, kal is Korean for "sword") is a fantasy MMORPG from Inixsoft. Originally from South Korea, KAL-Online is currently available in Korean, English and Chinese for free.

Character classes

Players are given a selection of classes to chose from:

  • Archer:

They use long-range attacks with their arrows to defeat their opponents. As well, archers must have the required On Target Point (OTP) to hit monsters and other players. Archers have the highest damage potential in the game depending on the job. Expert Archers (EA) is job class that offers physical attack skills. Imperial Commanders (IC) rely on curse spells to weaken their opponent. Imperial Commanders do have attack skills; however they lack the high damage rating of an Expert Archer. |}

  • Knight:

This class uses short-range attacks. Swords are the primary weapons. Knights must have the required On Target Point (OTP) to hit monsters and other players. Two job classes are also available for knights. Vagabonds focus primarily on offensive abilities and commonly use two handed weapons. Commanders use a sword and shield and are the opposite of Vagabonds since their skills focus on defense. Commanders also have “calls” that can increase a certain attribute for the entire party. An example of a call would be the Call of Physical Attack (CoPA). This call increases the physical attack points of all party members. |}

  • Mage:

They use long-range attacks with magical skills. Mages have a restriction where they cannot hit a certain monster or player due to the level difference. The damage that mages can give is different from archers and knights. Mages will hit the enemy with relatively constant damage. There are also two classes for mages. Hermits are more of an independent class due to the variety of high damage magical spells and Area of Effect (AoE) skills. CJB generally must rely on other players to level up. They are a great asset to parties due to their cure and buffing spells. |}

How to play

In this game, a player has to kill monsters in order to gain experience (exp). Each time he or she kills a monster, he or she earns a certain amount of experience. Each type of monster gives a certain amount of experience that is based on the level difference between the player that kills it and the monster level. The player can make a party, which in the experience points earned will be distributed to all members, following their level. 1 Skill Point and 5 Stat Points are given after each level-up.

So as to be stronger, players have to put their points in different stats :

  • Strength : Associated with Knights, improves the physical attack and On Target Points (accuracy).
  • Health : Increases the Max. Health points and Non Elemental Resistance.
  • Intelligence : Associated with mages, improves the magical Attack and the Elemental Resistances (Fire, Ice, Lightning Resistance)
  • Wisdom : Increases the Max. Magic points and the Curse Resistance.
  • Agility : Associated with Archers, increases Evasion Point and On Target Points (accuracy).

There are no common skills as each different job classes specialize in different stats.

Once the player reaches a certain level, he or she is able to get a new job, by finishing the Event Quest. This allows him or her to have new skills points, usually stronger than the old ones.

Level 30 Jobs

After compliting the Event Quests up to level 30 you will receive a new job name.

  • Archers become Apprentice Archers and gain the Concentration skill.
  • Knights become Apprentice Knights and gain the Transcendental Blow and defense skills.
  • Mages become Literary Person and gain the Defensive incantation and skills.

After receiving the new job name you will be given a quest for the Apprentice Trinket, a Trinket that will increase your character's stat points. You can also learn new skills from the Skill Teachers.

Level 50 Jobs

  • Archers become :

- Expert Archer : Based on powerful single target long ranged attacks
This class is specialized is PvE (Player versus Environment) combat. Expert Archers (EA) can easily kill monsters but their health point are always low.
Main Attributes: Agility, Health, Strength.
Advantages: long ranged attacks, high evade point, high On Traget Points (OTP), huge damage with one attack, the Emergency Escape skill, increased resistance to Elemenatal/Non Elemental/Curse attacks.
Disadvantages: low health point, low armor point.
- Imperial Commander : Based on debuff/curses of other players
This class is specialized in PvP (Player versus Player) combat. Imperial Commanders (IC) can easily humiliate another player in a duel but they will always have a hard time [...] stronger monsters.
Main Attributes: Agility, Strength, Health.
Advantages: long ranged attacks, high evade point, high On Traget Points (OTP), can disable enemies in combat for a brief period of time.
Disadvantages: low health point, low armor point, relatively low damage per attack.

  • Knights become :

- Vagabond Swordman : Based on powerful single target close combat attacks
This class is good at both PvP and PvE. Vagabond Swordsmen (Vaga) can easily kill an enemy and have high health points.
Main Attributes: Health, Strength, Agility.
Advantages: high health point, high armor point, high On Traget Points (OTP), huge damage with one attack, the Rush Ability that can get them close to enemies or help them escape.
Disadvantages: low evade point, close combat attacks.
- Commander : Based on protection of party members
This class is good at PvP and PvE. Commanders have high health points and the ability to help party members.
Main Attributes: Health, Strength, Agility.
Advantages: high health point, high armor point, high On Traget Points (OTP), can revive other players, can cast Elastic Shield to protect party members for a brief period of time, can heal party members at the cost of its own life, can cast Call (Physical Attack, Defense, On Target Point, Restoration), can enagage several monsters or players at the same time with a chance of winning against all of them.
Disadvantages: low evade point, relatively low damage per attack, close combat attacks.

  • Mages become :

- Hermit : Based on powerful single/multiple target attacks
This class is good at PvP and PvE. Hermits can easily kill an enemy or a swarm of enemies.
Main Attributes: Intelligence, Health, Wisdom.
Advantages: can revive other players (if they have the skill learned), can heal other players (if they have the skill learned), can cast Speed Up on other players (if they have the skill learned), can cast Refining Weapons on other players, can slow or disable enemies for a brief period of time, can attack several targets at the same time, their attacks are not based on On Target Points (they can never miss an enemy).
Disadvantages: low evade point, low health point, low armor point, can not attack with magic enemies that are 10 levels higher than them.
- Chairperson of Joong-Bang : Based on blessing or healing other players
Chairpersons of Joong-Bangcan (CJB) are mostly for support.
Main Attributes: Wisdom, Health, Intelligence.
Advantages: can revive other players, can heal other players, can cast Speed Up on other players, can cast Bless other players (increase: Strength, Health, Intelligence, Agility, the chance to score a critical hit), can slow or disable enemies for a brief period of time, can attack several targets at the same time, their attacks are not based on On Target Points (they can never miss an enemy), can party with players that are higher than them in places otherwise inaccessible.
Disadvantages: low evade point, low health point, low armor point, can not attack with magic enemies that are 10 levels higher than them, usually weak against enemies.

Quests

Like many MMORPGs, NPCs often provide a player with quests. Some quests are mandatory for a change of job (Event Quests). The players are often rewarded in some way after completing the quest. Some examples of rewards include items, experience points, contribution points, and skill points. KAL-Online quests are divided into three categories:

Tasks

Tasks usually consist of the easiest or shortest of the quests. They typically involve [...] a certain amount of enemies or collecting x amount of y items. The basic rewards for completing a task are money, items, equipment, contribution points, skill points or experience points.

Events

Events are typically harder than tasks and take longer to complete, but they offer a bigger reward to the player. Currently there are nine events which must be completed in order. Completing the fourth and ninth tasks allows the player to access the more advanced jobs.
Without doing the Event Quests you can not get any farther in the game.

Missions

Missions are not quests, but are concepts of quests, they are more like group quests, e.g the doggebi lord and the 8 pieces of the bronze mirror, or the demon queen in the cave of the giant bird, E-Mok island is different as it can be used as a training area more than a mission area but the 'thousand year old dragon' can be destroyed as a mission but is gaurded by many high level Demons

Ancient Animals and Transformation

After reaching level 15, players are able to do a quest where as a reward they are given an ancient animal to take care of; commonly known as an 'egg'. The 'egg' is gained from mages, knights and archers, just like chickens do it. Players raise the ancient animals from eggs to adulthood by [...] monsters with yellow/orange/red/purple names (equal to the player level or higher), or just sitting around with it equipped. The item will (when equipped) grant bonuses to the character's statistics. How much and of which stats are added is dependent on the type and level of the animal. When the egg reaches grades 11, 21, and 31, it will gain the ability to transform the player into a young, adult, or ancient animal, respectively. When this transformation is used the character's physical form changes, along with statistical increases and the ability to use special moves, at the cost of "Rage", a bar which is filled by attacking enemies. You will receive rage equal to 10% of the damage you deal to the enemy monsters.

  • Ancient Bird (Grants Intelligence, Agility, and Health). Commonly associated with Mages.

In Bird form you gain a ranged attack and at grade 31 and above the ability to become invulnerable for 15 seconds.

  • Ancient Tiger (Grants Strength, Health, and Agility). Commonly associated with Knights.

In Tiger form you have bonuses to close combat and at grade 31 and above the ability to hit the enemy with each and every attack for 15 seconds.

  • Ancient Panther (Grants Agility, Health, and Strength). Commonly associated with Archers.

In Panther form you gain high overland speed, a ranged attack, an ability to attack an enemy by teleporting at its location and at grade 31 and above the ability to hit the enemy only with critical hits for 15 seconds.

The damage you do while transformed into an Ancient Animal is influenced by its primary attribute (IE: your damage while transformed into a Tiger is influenced by the amount of Strength your character has).
You can transform into an Ancient Animal regardless of your class (IE: Mages can transfom into Panthers).

KalCash

KalOnline currency which you can buy with real currency. KalCash enables you to buy special items inaccessible to non-paying customers. This has led to a lot of credit card fraud in the past. Recently they attempted to remedy this by implementing a new system where items bought with a credit card are bound to the account, thus they can not be sold/traded or gifted to another player.
The items bought from the website with KalCash can be used in the game, can be sold or sent as gifts to other players.
KalCash items (in-game items that were bought with KalCash) can not be traded/sold/sent as gifts by a character under a certain level that is set by the game administrators.

Also 'Kalpoints' Were placed in the game which are not bought by cash or credit/debit card, but are earned by the attendance check,or just replying to simply a 'pro vs cons' freeboard

Social

An enjoyable game with integrated chat and a guild system. There is a large set of unwritten social rules about how to interact with other players.

  • Guild system: each player can create a new guild or join an existing guild. Guild can be of level 1-4 and will receive new options as their level increases.

A player can have one of the fallowing positions in the guild: Leader, Co-Leader (Subleader), Chief, Official Member, Unofficial Member. All position except the "Unofficial Member" position have a tag that can be seen by other players.
As a member of a guild you can participate at Castle Wars or Player versus Player events with your guild mates.

  • Alliances: Guilds may ally one with each other to for alliances of up to 8 guilds that will participate at the Castle Siege if the Alliance is selected to participate or at the Castle Siege Defense if the Alliance already owns the Castle.
  • Players in game range around the world including Asia, Europe, the United States of America, and elsewhere. Because there are so many cultures and languages put together there is a lack of communication amongst players. The main language is English on the international servers (Hanin, Naraeha, Bango).
  • There is a system of Player versus Player (PvP) combat. This can be in the form of duels or wars. By participating at such events you can gain Honor Points and Reward Points.
  • There is a system of Player [...] (PK) combat. This can be done through the assassin mask. The player that uses such a mask has to be higher than level 6.

While using an Assassin Mask you can not kill players that are partying with you, you can not use teleport scrolls, you can not use/talk to NPCs, you can not log out from the game, if you get killed by a player or a monster you will lose a normal amount of experience and there is a chance that you will drop an item from your inventory (weapons, armor pieces, accessories, ancient animals, geons, etc.).

Why use an Assassin Mask?
There are situations when player come into conflict and one of the ways to solve these situations is the use of an Assassin Mask. While using the mask (a maximum time of 3 hours) you can kill other players and you're name will be hidden from all other players (your name will be "ASSASSIN" with red colored characters). The players that the assassin kills will lose 10% of the experience they would've lost in case of death.

  • As well there is a system of mentorship where a new character can form a bond with a teacher who is higher level. The Student has to be level 15 or lower while the Teacher has to be level 16 or higher. This encourages friendly player interaction and has in-game benefits for both players.

The Student will receive grade 8 armor (except the chest armor) and cand ask for information or items from its Teacher. The Student can also accept students of its own thus the Teacher of the Student becoming the Grand Teacher of the Student's students.
The Teacher or Grand Teacher will colect Tuition Money when the Student or Grand Student picks up geons from monsters. The Tuition Money is colected only while the Teacher is logged on in the game. The Teacher has the moral duty to guide the Student through the game and help him or her along the way.
Both the Teacher and Student will receive geons in their Storage when the Student levels up to level 16 or 30 (20,000 geons at level 16 and 50,000 geons at level 30).
The Teacher-Student relationship can be cancelled by any of them at any time. Every player can have only 1 (ONE) Teacher per Account no matter the server (IE: if you have a Teacher on server Hanin you can not have a new Teacher on server Bango). If you cancel the relationship with a Teacher you may register under some other Teacher but you will not receive the grade 8 armor pieces or the geons after leveling to 16 or 30.
