Julius Brewster Cotton
Julius Brewster Cotton (b.Feb 16, 1978 Brooklyn, New York) was born Julius Brewster Jr., to Denise Grant (Brooklyn, New York) and Julius Brewster Sr.(Brooklyn, New York).
Biography
Julius began his professional dance career in Ohio with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company after graduating from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 2000.Julius was a student at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan. A place he has often credited with keeping in the arts. While in Dayton, Ohio Julius was a freelance journalist for the Dayton Weekly News as well as the Dayton Daily News while still performing and traveling with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. In addition, Julius was appointed by the Mayor and City council in 2003 to serve on the City's Arts Council where he remained for 4 years [www.ci.centerville.oh.us/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=113&&Itemid=241 ·]. An active member in his community Julius also served on the Family Support and Selections Committee of the Dayton Chapter's Habitat For Humanity. Julius also ran for political office seeking a seat on the City Council for the City of Centerville.
In 2007 Julius Brewster was awarded the Josie Award for Best Male Dancer in Dayton, Ohio 1.
In 2007 Julius ended his time with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and moved to Mexico City, Mexico to dance with the Tania Perez-Salas Dance Company. After artistic differences however, Julius left the company and joined El Taller Coreografioc de la UNAM in 2008 under the direction of Gloria Contreras[http://www.tcunam.org/tcu.cfm]also in Mexico City.
In joining the company Julius became the first African American to do so in the companies 40 year history. Julius had his choreographic debut with the company in June of 2009 with his Ballet "Tango Ingles" set to Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breathe".
