Joseph Earl Bates (May 1, 1968 – September 26, 2003) was convicted of the 1990 [...] of Charles Edward Jenkins and was executed in 2003 by lethal injection at Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina by the state of North Carolina.

Bates was the third man executed by North Carolina in 2003. His lawyers alleged that jurors had not been told about brain damage Bates suffered in a car accident prior to the crime. However, Governor Mike Easley declined clemency in the case and Bates was executed as scheduled at 2:00 a.m.

His last meal consisted of fried pork chops, french fries, hush puppies, apple pie, Pepsi, and Dr Pepper.
