History
In 1988, after graduating from the University of Alberta with a B.A. in Psychology and serving with the Edmonton Police Service for several years, Jonoke CEO Jody Bevan noticed that the medical market was under-serviced and that there existed no full EMR office solutions with a graphical interface. Clinics were confined to simple programs for electronic billing, occasional scheduling and word programs. Together with his wife, Norine—who is a former Math teacher—and knowledge of the 4th Dimension programming language, Jody set out to create a more comprehensive solution and founded Jonoke Software Development Inc.
In 1995, Jody and Norine teamed up with consultant and now co-owner, Dr. Vince Di Ninno, B. Sc., Ph. D, M. D., CCFP, who graduated from the University of Calgary's Medical School following a stint with the Department of National Defense that began in 1978. In his professional practice in Medicine Hat, AB, Dr. Di Ninno had used other EMR solutions, eventually writing his own for the Atari and the Mac OS. He advised Jody and Norine on many of the physician interface aspects of JonokeMed™ , Jonoke's EMR product, and even wrote several of them himself.
Jonoke's owners created a business model is one that relies heavily on word-of-mouth referrals from existing clients, so very few of Jonoke's dividends are spent on advertizing. The company has, however, been featured in several publications, with the Business Development Bank of Canada , Medical News Magazine, the Globe and Mail , Backbone Businuess Technology Lifestyle Magazine and, most recently, ExecDigital Magazine featuring new stories about Jonoke and JonokeMed™.
JonokeMed™
Jonoke's chief product, JonokeMed™, is currently used across Canada, the United States and the United Arab Emirates by more that 1600 health care professionals, and more than 800 of these individuals are doctors. JonokeMed™ is a customizable, secure EMR suite for paperless medical offices.
Freedom©
Freedom© is like JonokeMed™, but sold much like traditional "off the shelf" software, based on the number of area accounts or active resources being scheduled. Clinics also choose to purchase the options individually required, the yearly updates and the amount of training or set-up assistance required.
JERMS (Jonoke Electronic Resource Management System)
Jonoke Software developed a program called JERMS (Jonoke Electronic Management System), which permits support staff to access information about client call(s), site(s) and organization, alerting staff of both new calls and updates on existing calls. JERMS also identifies priority inquiries, so that the workflow of its support staff can be dictated by need or urgency. JERMS will check the components of user servers and the JonokeMed™ system every two minutes and alert users of any problems, or automatically update information like billing codes, forms, lists and drugs, among other data. Finally, JERMS e-mails subscribed clients a record of all bug fixes and new features added to JonokeMed™.
Growth
Jonoke is currently expanding globally, moving first around the United States and to the United Arab Emirates, so the software and support will, in future, be available in a variety of languages.
