John T. Sheridan (professor)
Professor John T. Sheridan is currently Professor of Optical Engineering in University College, Dublin, Ireland.
He was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. In 1985, he received his Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering from University College Galway (NUIG), and one year later his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He worked as a Research Assistant of Prof. William T. Rhodes. From 1987 to 1991 he studied at Jesus College Oxford and was awarded his doctorate in the Department of Engineering Science, Oxford University, for work carried out under the supervision of Prof. Laszlo Solymar and Prof. Colin J. R. Sheppard. In 1991, he held a postdoctoral fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation and in 1992 another one by an European Community Bursary (Human Capital and Mobility) in the Physikalisches Institut of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universitaet Erlangen-Nürnberg at the Lehrstuhl fur Angewandte Optik under the leadership of Prof. Dr A.W. Lohmann. In 1994 he took up a position as a Visiting Scientist at the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy. In 1997 he was appointed Permanent Lecturer in the School of Physics, DIT Dublin. He joined the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in University College Dublin (UCD) in 2000 as a College Lecturer, and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005 and to Professor for Optical Engineering in 2007 respectively.
