John Rinn

John L. Rinn is a Boston-based biologist currently researching RNA. Rinn discovered Long noncoding RNA (also known as LINCs or lincRNAs) while still a grad student at Yale. In 2007 Dr. Rinn shook the scientific world when he showed that one of the LINCs serves a vital function in human cells. The LINC, which he dubbed HOTAIR, delivers proteins to a crucial cluster of genes and helps regulate cancer growth, immune response and fat and stem-cell production. In high school, Dr. Rinn preferred snowboarding to his studies until he was transformed by the novel Atlas Shrugged. Dr. Rinn is associated with the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation saying "It is truly an honor to be recognized by a scientific organization as storied as the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, especially as it appreciates the value in taking big risks for big rewards. Being granted this Award is like winning the Super Bowl for a young scientist starting a lab!"
