John Renz

John F. Renz, MD, PhD is the Surgical Director for the Adult Liver Transplantation Program and an Attending Surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. On September 24, 2004, Dr. Renz was part of the first surgical team to ever perform a combined heart-liver transplant in The New York region (CS ProgresS 2006). Very few of these procedures were ever performed worldwide (CS Newsmakers 2004).

Dr. Renz is best known for his “extended criteria” transplantation, or the use of organs that don't meet the usual criteria for transplantation due to various health problems, but are still healthy enough for a successful transplant (Liver MD 2006). He proved that regular and extended donor criteria (EDC) liver recipients have equivalent survival rates, and EDC is able to increase the access to liver transplantation (Liver MD 2006).
