Jimmy Jib
A Jimmy Jib (or just Jib) is a television, movie or film camera support. A Jimmy jib is similar to a crane dolly with a remote head that can be controlled by a camera operator.
The Jimmy Jib is designed and manufactured by Stanton in Phoenix, Arizona.
Construction
Initially designed as a cheaper alternative to a real dolly, the Jimmy Jib is essentially a long arm. Unlike the traditional dolly, the Jimmy has no operator onboard. Instead, the remote head can pan and tilt around vertical and horizontal rotation axis and is controlled by a joystick. The arm of the Jimmy Jib can extend from 6 to 40 feet.
The Jimmy Jib can be easily and quickly put in place. There is no need for additional safety for the camera operators, and the counterbalance is more simple than a crane dolly. This simplicity allows the use in productions with a tight budget, and allows the director to try and choose some changes to the original setup with little waste of time.
The Jimmy Jib can be operated by either one or two operator. A single cameraman can operate the arm as well as the head but, for more complex production needs, a configuration with an arm operator and a camera operator can be provided. In the latter case, a separate station for the camera is used.
A disadvantage of the traditional dolly over the Jimmy Jib is that a real head is used on the dolly, so that it provides more accurate and smoother motion.
