Jim Puckett
Jim Puckett was an American track and field sprinter at Cove High School and the University of Oregon.
Early years
Knicknamed "Cove Comet", Puckett is considered among the greatest track and field athletes in Oregon prep history.
Puckett was the 100 yard dash state "B" champion three times, from 1956-1958. His time of 9.6 seconds in 1958 at the state meet is the fastest time in the event for any high school sprinter in the history of high school track in Oregon. The 100-yard dash, no longer contested, was run from 1927-1977.
Puckett was also a two-time state "B" champion in the 220-yard dash in 1957 and 1958 and won a state long jump championship in 1958.
During his high school years, he developed a famous track rivalry with Amos Marsh from Wallowa High School. The two dueled repeatedly in the 100 yard dash, with Puckett winning every race.
College years
After winning six state titles between 1956-1958, he went to the University of Oregon on a track scholarship, but could never equal the success of his high school career.
