Jeffrey Crane

Jeffrey S. Crane, BA, MBA, MPA, Ph.D., CEM (May 24, 1968 - Present) is president of Simpex Inc 1, a Strategic International Management Company located in Miami, Florida. Dr. Crane also is the Executive Director of the Congressman John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in Pennsylvania.  The IUP is the largest member university of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Crane also holds academic appointments at the University of Miami, College of Medicine (1996- Present) and Western Carolina University (1993- Present), and a Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh (1996-Present), Center for National Preparedness.

Crane holds a 1995 B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Appalachian State University. Entering graduate school at Troy State University in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating with a Master in Public Administration- Healthcare Administration in 1997. Crane then attended the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, and was awarded a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2003, focused on Healthcare Administration and Management Information Systems (MIS), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Health in 2005. His dissertation was titled: "Assessment of Community Healthcare Providers’ Ability and Willingness to Respond to a Bioterrorism Attack in Florida”. He also completed graduate certificates in Disaster Management, Health Care Management, and Management Information Systems. His last publication is called, “A Systematic Examination of Terrorists’ Use of the Internet for Recruiting”2, and was published the in International Journal of Cyber Crime and Criminology. He is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) by the International Association of Emergency Managers.

During his career, Dr. Crane has: traveled in over 30 countries and served with the US Army 11th Special Forces Group as an engineer, and in the US Navy as a Corpsman; held the Associate Hospital Administrator position at Jackson Health System, Miami, Florida, overseeing the billion dollar corporation and the nation’s busiest hospital’s (based on number of admissions to a single facility) emergency operations and pandemic influenza preparedness activities; worked as a bioterrorism coordinator for the State of Florida; served as a subject matter expert on mass casualty incidents for the cruise industry and local governments, security expert for State Department, and an Expert Advisor on healthcare management issues to the U.S. Surgeon General and the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Florida Secretary of Health and state senators, and local government officials. He has responded to numerous hurricanes and man-made disaster.

Since beginning his tenure at IUP, Crane has built an university-wide educational and research institute that excels in disaster management, homeland security, and public health preparedness, securing grants from the Department of Defense, and federal/state agencies.
