Jean Eddy Saint Paul
Jean Eddy Saint Paul, Ph.D. is an internationally noted Haitian scholar and author. He is the first Haitian to complete the master’s program in Latin American Studies at Pontifica Universidad Javeriana in Bogota as well as the first Haitian to earn a Ph.D. in Sociology from El Colegio de Mexico. He has written a wide range of international publications on issues including civil society and political process in Haiti, comparative and political sociology of the Haitian state and ruling class, the intersection between politics and religions in Haiti and Mexico, religious pluralism, tolerance and democracy, and laïcité and secularization in the Haitian state. He was the first Haitian to earn an MA in Latin American studies at the Javeriana Pontificia University in Bogotá, Colombia, becoming the first Haitian to complete this degree as well<ref name=":1" />.
Academic career
Dr. Saint Paul is a Professor of Politics and Sociology. He teaches Haitian Heritage at the City University of New York<ref name=":2" />. His academic career focuses on sociology of religion, political sociology, citizenship, intellectual history of the elites and qualitative research methods, specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean<ref name=":0" />. Saint Paul joined the Brooklyn College- CUNY as the founding director of the CUNY Haitian Studies Institute in 2016<ref name=":0" />. Prior to this, he served as a professor at Univesidad of Guanajuato’s Division of Law, Politics and Government and Master Program in Political Analysis, as well as at the Inter-Institutional Doctorate Program in Law, Politics and Government<ref name=":1" />.
Saint Paul has been a visiting scholar at the Ph.D. Program in Political Science and Master Program in Sociology at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies and the University of Virginia, and a visiting fellow at the Centre d’estudes et de recherches interantionals in Paris<ref name=":0" />.
Saint Paul served as a member of the National System of Scholars at the National Council of Science and Technology, and served for 12 years as the head of the library and member of the faculty of human sciences at the State of University of Haiti, Port-au-Prince<ref name=":0" />.
Awards, honors and fellowships
Professor Saint Paul is the recipient of the 2017 Faculty Resource Network (FRN) at New York University and the Leonard ’50 and Claire ’52 Tow Faculty Research Travel Fellowships for the project “Civil Society and Politics of Memory in Haiti”.
Saint Paul was a member of the National System of Scholars, Level 1. National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT), Mexico, from January 2016 to July 2016, and received academic distinction for excellence in teaching, research and services by The Mexican Secretariat of Public Education, Mexico, July 16th, 2014 to July 2017.
He also received the research award from the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education, Mexico, 2010-2012: $15,000<ref name=":2" />.
