Jaysinghrao Pawar

Jaysinghrao Pawar (30 December 1941 – 26 March 2026) was an Indian historian from Maharashtra. He was an authority on Maratha and Kolhapur history.

Life and career

Pawar was born in a farmer's family in Hadsar in Pune district, Bombay Province, on 30 December 1941. He did his schooling in Hadsar but moved to Kolhapur for higher education. He did his post graduation in arts and later completed his doctorate under Appasaheb Pawar in 1964 at Shivaji University. He worked as a professor for over three decades.

He wrote more than 25 books for college students including some historical works like History of the Marathas, Marathas' War of Independence and the biography of the founder of Karveer Tarabai. His books on Maratha history and the biography of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj are popular.

Pawar died in Kolhapur on 26 March 2026, at the age of 84. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his condolence message said, "A principled, indepth and quietly great researcher has been lost".
