January 3, 2007 (Wednesday)

  • With it being nearly 10 years since the handover Hong Kong people have given the government a fail mark of only 46 percent, according to a Democratic Party poll. A telephone survey of 844 residents, conducted last week, also found more than two-thirds of respondents described their economic situation as "about the same" or worse as it was at the time of the July 1, 1997, handover. 1

  • Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp overtook Bank of China (Hong Kong) as the biggest mortgage lender in 2006 after a home-loan price war amid shrinking mortgage and housing markets. 2

January 5, 2007 (Friday)

  • One of the prominent figures of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, Wang Dan, is seeking to stay in Hong Kong eight years after being exiled to the United States. Wang, who served six years in jail for his part in the incident, was released in 1998 and given a medical parole to the United States. 3

January 8, 2007 (Monday)

  • Plastic-bag waste should continue to fall in 2007 after a successful campaign saw dramatic reductions last year, according to the Green Student Council. A number of retailers have decided to expand the "No Plastic Bag Day" program introduced last year, and more companies have decided to join the campaign, the council said Wednesday. 4

  • A fishmonger who was caught smoking at the Ngau Tau Kok wet market has become the first offender to be prosecuted under the new anti-smoking law which came into effect New Year's Day. 5

  • Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen clearly indicated Thursday that he is preparing to run for a second term in March and will announce his platform later. However, he stopped short of a formal announcement of his candidacy. 6

  • Four major public transport operators have refused to offer cheaper rides for the disabled despite a survey showing that such concessions would increase their passenger loads and encourage more social activities by groups for the disabled. 7

  • The Immigration Department started carrying out spot checks on pregnant mainland women at border control points Monday ahead of new regulations next month aimed at preventing overcrowding in public maternity wards. 8

January 25, 2007 (Thursday)

  • Raids in Mong Kok's vice district have smashed three brothels operating out of local apartments, police said Wednesday. "Police will work to strengthen our enforcement of vice laws," said Special Duty Squad senior inspector Yau King- hung. 9
