Jana Jones

Jana Marie Jones (d. 2023) was an Australian Egyptologist and research fellow in the Department of Ancient History at Macquarie University. She was an expert on ancient Egyptian textiles. She also contributed to research on archaeological excavations at Helwan cemetery and Hierakonpolis.
Her research provided evidence that mummification occurred in Prehistoric Egypt, approximately 1,500 years earlier than previously believed, through the analysis of Mummy S. 293, the earliest preserved mummy from the Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy.
She completed a BA degree at Macquarie University in 1981, majoring in modern languages. Later, she received an MA (1998) and then PhD (2012) in Egyptology, also from Macquarie University. Her thesis supervisor was Boyo Ockinga.
