James Morris (chess player)
James A. Morris is an Australian chess player who holds the International Master title. He was born on 22 April 1994, in Melbourne, Australia. Morris currently lives in the suburb of Glenhuntly, Melbourne, and is attending the University High School.
Tournament successes
In 2007, Morris competed in the Oceania Zonal Championships in Nadi, Fiji. He obtained a score of 5/9, which gave him the FM title. Two years later, in Tweed Heads, Australia, he competed again in the same tournament. His score of 6.5/9 and an =2nd placing behind the winner, GM David Smerdon, gave him the certified IM title. Other notable results were:
- 2006 Newcastle Champion with a score of 6/7
- 2006 Launceston Champion with a score of 6/7
- 2007 U14 Australian Champion
- Qualifying for the 2008 World Youth Championships in Vung Tau, Vietnam.
- 2nd in the 2009 Freytag Checkmate Open, with a score of 5.5/7
- 2nd in the 2009 Victorian Championships, with a score of 8/11
- currently ranked no 1 under 16 from Australia with FIDE
