Ira Seidenstein
Ira Seidenstein - a teacher and director of clown, physical acting and classical plays. In 1993 founded Quantum Theatre: Slapstick to Shakespeare method.
Ira has worked in over 100 live productions, as well as TV, film, commercials, and radio.
Ira Seidenstein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Squirrel Hill district). Citizen of Australia, USA, Aotearoa(New Zealand).
iQ - Ira's Quantum Theatre: Slapstick to Shakespeare is for actors, teachers, directors, clowns or physical performers.
iQ was established in 1993 after 20-years research and practical application.
Early Career
Apprenticeship to circus master and clown Danny Chapman who was founder of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College.
Ira then trained closely with Lecoq's muse Carlo Mazzone-Clementi. Carlo was the foremost physical trainer for actors in the USA. Then Carlo founded the Dell' arte International School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake, California. Carlo's staff at Dell'arte included Jane Hill,Joan Schirle, Jane Lapiner, Avner Eisenberg, Jon Paul Cook.
In 1981 Ira made his first tours Downunder to teach and perform clown in Australia and New Zealand.
In New Zealand Ira worked solo and frequently also with creative partner Barbara Doherty. Their duet was known as Heroes, Regulars, and Jerks.
Due to his work in New Zealand Ira received New Zealand citizenship. At the citizenship ceremony Dame Catherine Tizard (Mayor and later Governor-General) made a speech about Ira's contribution to New Zealand arts and culture. Later recieved citizenship also in Australia.
Second Stage of Career
Sydney 1985 to 1993
Encouraged to relocate to Sydney by Ian Tasker (Tasker was director, assistant, stage manager for Barrie Humphries).
John Bell hired Ira to help establish the national Bell Shakespeare Company.
Other contracts that quickly appeared were with Kai Tai Chan for Ira to establish acrobatic classes at Kai Tai's One Extra Dance Company. Soon Ira had the largest acrobatic classes in Australia. Then Kim Carpenter hired Ira to act in David Malouf's An Imaginary Life at Belvoir St. Theatre. In that production Ira played the Wild Child opposite Norman Kaye as the Poet.
Ira performed completely different shows at the Sydney Opera House, Bondi Pavillion, Belvoir St Theatre. From the Belvoir St show Ira was asked to commence teach acting and theatre at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
1993 to 1999 - Launch of Quantum Theatre: Slapstick to Shakespeare and work mainly in Scandinavia.
2000 to 2009 - Work in internationally including with Cirque du Soleil, Company Collisions in UK and teaching Quantum Theatre workshops internationally and within Australia. Completion of PhD in Education - thesis "From the Liminal to the Visceral".
