Infanta Iñiga of Asturias

Doña Iñiga; Infanta of Asturias was the daughter of the Visigoth christian king Pelayo of Asturias who founded and ruled the Kingdom of Asturias, and sister to Ermesinda (who married Peter of Cantabria) and Favila (who succeeded their father as King of Asturias). She then married a nobleman named Don Sancho Velarde, a knight who bravely fought against the Moors during the days of the Reconquista. The couple lived on the land in the mountains of Santander given to her husband by her father the king. The land was later known as Tagle, and the couple's descendants then took the same name which eventually gave rise to the Tagle family, an aristocratic family who once held great importance of the Spanish and Mexican nobiliy in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries which includes the Marquis of Altamira, Marquis of Torre Tagle, Marquis of Trujillo, Marquis of Las Salinas, and founding member of the House of Iturbide; the Royal House of Imperial Mexico.
