Hughes Marino is a U.S. based commercial real estate firm that exclusively represents tenants and buyers. It was founded by husband and wife, Jason Hughes (CEO) and Shay Hughes (COO). Beginning in 2011, the company started its headquarters with 14 employees in San Diego. Today they’ve grown to 86, offering services in six major regions in California including San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
They've been recognized nationally for their company culture. In 2016, Fortune ranked it #7 for Best workplace in the Nation and in 2017 #4 for Best Workplace in Southern California. In 2015 and 2017 Entrepreneur magazine ranked the company #2 and #3 for Top Company Culture, respectively. Several business journals have also highlighted their culture as well. The husband and wife duo actively take part in the community and have pioneered public policies such as SB 1171 and created the ACT, the Association for Commercial Tenants. They also served on task forces for city initiatives, such as the new Chargers stadium.

Hughes Marino represents tenants and buyers only, avoiding conflicts of interest with landlords. Their services include tenant representation, project and construction management, lease administration and lease audit services in the main service regions. As a smaller function of the company, Hughes Marino offers national and global tenant representation by partnering with a network of brokers in every metropolitan area in the United States and beyond. The company is independently owned with no alliance to a larger parent company, allowing them to work with whoever they choose. Nationwide services include tenant representation, program, project and construction management, and lease audit services. Tenant representation is offered globally.
History
2011 – Opened San Diego Headquarters
2014 – Expanded to Orange County office
2015 – Expanded to Los Angeles office
2017 – Expanded to Seattle, WA office
2015 – SB 1171 “Dual Agency Bill” signed into law. This was pioneered by CEO Jason Hughes, requiring all commercial real estate brokers to disclose if they are representing landlord/tenant/both to the customer.
2017 – Association for Commercial Tenants (ACT) formed by Jason and Shay Hughes – nonprofit organization to raise awareness of dual agency in commercial real estate. Mission statement - The Association for Commercial Tenants provides educational support, legislative guidance and industry unification for businesses involved in commercial real estate transactions with landlords. ACT stands in opposition to the inherent conflict of interest created by dual-agency brokerage representation and generally seeks to even the playing field for companies on the tenant and buyer side of negotiations.
