Hopi Pale Grey Squash
The Hopi Pale Grey Squash is an heirloom cultivar of Cucurbita maxima whose round fruit weighs AbOUT 10 pounds. It has a pale gray rind that is ridged and very hard. This hard rind makes it an excellent keeping variety. The orange flesh is both sweet and dry, large vines are quite vigorous. It is a Southwestern heirloom from the Hopi people that has nearly become extinct in recent years.
Winter Squash needs to be grown in rich soil, amended with manure, compost, or other rich source of plant nutrients. Plant in rows, 5–8 feet in both directions, sowing one seed every 6–12 inches. They can also be planted in hills, the hills need to be 6–8 feet apart. Five seeds should be planted per per hill and thin to best three plants. They require full sun, ample moisture and insect control. It is harvested in autumn when skins are too tough to be punctured easily with your thumbnail.
