History of Gulfad tribe
Gulfad tribe is an ancient Baloch tribe of Rajanpur. According to old history tellers, the tribe has its roots in famous Mazari Baloch tribe. It is said that the first person of the Gulfad tribe was a noble person of the tribe and was a member of the traditional baloch tribal council so called jirga. He was disable from his foot and it is one of the oldest traditions of the baloch tribes to name some one after his disability. The disability of that person gave him name of GundPhaz (Gund=twisted and Phaz=foot). As he was noble person of the tribe, his successors were also given a family name relating to that person. It is the tradition that in case of any sort of dispute the weaker party has to migrate any where else to PReVENT the further disturbance, so any dispute in the tribe forced this new density to migrate from there, and they went and settled in the woods near the bank of Indus river. This place during the attacks by Muhammad Bin Qasim was used as the Mid point by the forces during their passage to Multan. So by the geography and the location, the place was named as Adhiwala which is still in use now. After the arrival of the English, the word Gundphaz due to its excessive use became Gulphaz or Gulfaz, and it is still in use by some people of the tribe, while some use Gulfad as their caste. It is also said that after arrival to their new location the people of Gulfad tribe were deprived of their property and led a life of poors here. They worked at the Lands of Hindu landlord, predecessor of present Sheikh family of Kotla Mughlan. They mostly got wheat seed for their food from the landlords, as it is tradition named as Bar wandaee (distribution of wheat in poors). It is said during such s distribution a man of the tribe named Kammal Khan ( Khan is also a traditional symbol used with name) uttered some words that inflamed the landlord and he ordered Kammal Khan to leave. The poor man refused because of his poverty, but other people convinced him for the sake of their advantage and he came back and decided to work anywhere else and to earn money. All the men of tribe accompanied him and they worked and earned money. On the same time the proud landlord faced losses and came in a situation to meet the losses by selling his land in the form of patche. He sold and poor Gulfads bought even they became the big land owners of Qaziwala and Bolaywala. The most prominent personality of the tribe in the beginning of the 20th century was Walli Muhammad Khan Gulfad with other names Fateh Muhammad Khan Gulfad, Ahmad Khan Gulfad, Gull Muhammad Khan Gulfad.
