Hip-hop feud

A hip-hop feud (also known as rap feud, rap rivalry, hip-hop rivalry, and the most frequently used in hip-hop culture, beef) is a controversy in which two rappers create a rivalry that is manifested by each slandering and confronting the other in a number of ways. One of the most common way rap rivals clash is through "diss songs," which are music tracks that contain within the lyrics insults directed at the artist's rival. Fueds are also Fueled by rivals placing targeted insults in the press, confronting one another at public events and in numerous other ways. However, it is now known that many rap feuds have been mere publicity stunts crafted by the rivals and supported by the rivals' record labels in order to pump album sales. And, further, in some cases, publicity rivalries and actual rivalries intermingle to sometimes violent results, as happened in the east coast/west coast rivalry of the early and mid nineties. When this happens, feuds spill over into assault and, on infrequent occasion, [...]. In fact, there is still speculation in the music press that the 1997 murders of rappers the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur may have been linked to their rivalry with one another.
