Helghast (Killzone)
The Helghast are the main enemy in the game Killzone. A humanoid race with a passion for vengeance and hardship, they are led by Scolar Visari and General Lente and have a striking appearance, based on a Fascist-like army. They were assisted in the Vekta Wars by General Adams.
History
Sometime in the future, humanity has colonized many planets. One group of people attempt to colonize the outlying world of Helghan. However, the world is extremely desolate and the air scorches the colonists lungs. Also present in the atmosphere is heavy radiation, which causes the colonists' hair to fall out and their children to be born deformed; the average Helghan is taller than a normal human. In time, the colonists' bodies adapt, allowing them to breathe the caustic air. However, due to their unique adaptions the require distinctive specialized respirators when off-world and has lent them the epithet of "Bucketheads".
First Helghan War
With a pro-human military and industry and corruption controlling politics, many poor Helghans blamed Humanity for the hardship they have endured and started the First Helghan War. After several years of war, Scolar Visari eventually emerged as leader and declared himself the first Emperor of the Helghast and started ethnic cleansing programs throughout the Helghan system.
Second Helghan War
Eventually, he declared war on humanity, invading an ISA planet called Vekta. The ISA had built a number of defense platforms on several planets that were supposed to stop an advancing army from attacking or invading any planets and were supposed to be foolproof. But, with the help of a traitor known as General Adams, the platforms malfunctioned, leaving Vekta open to an attack from the Helghast.
Military
- Light Soldiers - The weakest of all the Helghast, but also the fastest.
- Base Soldiers - The most common type of Helghast but rarely found alone or even in pairs.
- Elite Soldiers - These appear later in the game and are typically armed with light machine guns and are very strong. They are often found with Base Soldiers.
- Assault Soldiers - Also appearing later, these are much tougher than Elites but slow moving due to their distinctive armour, which makes them incredibly resistant to damage.
- Base Commanders - These are as strong as an Elite but are very rare, and appear to help raise troop morale. Base commanders are easily recognized by their lack of helmets and that they wear bright red robes.
- Bodyguards - Only seen almost at the end of the game, the Bodyguards are the strongest enemy in the game. They are intelligent, seek cover when injured and look for opportunities to ambush the player.
- Sentry Bots - These flying gun platforms attack you with dual machine guns. They are not well-armored but can be hard to hit because of their lateral movement. They are encountered AbOUT half way through the game.
- Bounty Hunter - Only appears once in the game, when Templar and his team encounter a heavily defended beacon. The Bounty Hunter (as referred to on the Vekta Today website) uses a laser designator to co-ordinate artillery onto the team, but is about as tough as a Base Soldier.
- Attack Dogs - Helghast Attack Dogs were introduced in Killzone: Liberation for the PSP. The dogs sport armor similar to the base Helghast soldier, even down to the iconic orange goggles, adjusted for the dogs' eyes.
- Spider Mines - Spider Mines were also introduced in Killzone: Liberation. These mines are robotic spiders that chased after any living thing until it blew up beside of it's target.
- The Claw - Only seen in Killzone (PS3) and once in Killzone Liberation, this is a giant, possibly robotic Helghast that has a large machine gun welded into it's right arm. The Claw FACES Templar as a boss in the final chapter of the game, right before Templar faces Metrac. This giant Helghan is commonly named "The Claw" due to a Game Developer (Motherh) hinting it's name on the Playstation Forums.
- Air Trooper - These soldiers make use of SL-06 personal jet propulsion prototype systems that give these troopers mobility to fly across the battlefield. Production was ordered by General Metrac himself after seeing the devices effectiveness.
Important characters
Scolar Visari
General Lente
General Lente is the Commander-in-Chief of the Helghast Third Army, directly under the command of Scolar Visari. Lente led the Helghan First Assault Division into Planet Vekta, and stormed several beachheads. Lente is extremely devoted to leading the Helghan Army into the right direction. He despises humans, and has Fascist beliefs. When he is finally defeated by the ISA squad led by Templar, he tells Hakkha of how his brother was killed as a result of his pro-human beliefs by him. Upon hearing this, Hakha kills him. He is VOICED by Steven Berkoff.
General Armin Metrac
Armin Metrac has his only appearance in Killzone: Liberation. Visari personally ordered Metrac to conquer Vekta. He is a sadist who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. Metrac is different from other Helghast due to the fact that he has hair and an athletic build. He is also charismatic and is known by his cruel interrogation techniques and committing [...] against civilians. He was killed while engaging Captain Jan Templar in combat at his secret base. It had been debated that he is not technically Helghast, and that he's really a human that has gained favor from Scolar Visari. It was recently revealed on the unlockable content (accessable only on the game contents) that he is a Helghast who has evolved to the point that he can breath both in both Helgan and Earth-like atmospheres.
Colonel Cobar
Colonel Cobar is Metrac's loyal friend and an officer in the Helghan military. Known as "White death" due to the number of people he has killed, many Helghans are afraid of him. Metrac himself personally recruited him for the invasion of Vekta due to his loyalty to him and his high kill count.
