Hanns Holger Rutz
Hanns Holger Rutz (born 1977) is a German composer, installation artist and software designer.
Biography
Hanns Holger Rutz, also known as sciss, studied computer music and software engineering at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) from 1999 to 2004. From 2002 to 2004, he worked as a student assistent at the TU Berlin. After his studies, he moved to Weimar, where he is currently Artistic Assistant at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar and Lecturer at the Bauhaus-Universität. At the moment, he is working towards a Ph.D. at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) Graz, Austria.
Artistic work
Rutz's work can be broadly defined as belonging to the category of ambient, noise and electro-acoustic music; live electronics is another area of interest. He is known as an expert in the software synthesis language SuperCollider, having made several important contributions to the language. These include the cross-platform audio editor Eisenkraut, JCollider and perhaps most importantly, SwingOSC. Among his compositions are; Stamina (2001), Residual (2002), Netzhaut (2003), Ichneumon and Crosshatch (2004), Zeichnung (2005), Strahlung (2006) and Tremor (2007). His installations include; Quagmire (2001), Electric Steamboat (2004), Rigid String Geometry and Zelle 148 (2006), Vice Versa, Kalligaphie and C.C.C (2007) and Urban Spaces (2008).
