Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute
The Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) is a cancer treatment facility that will specialize in proton therapy. When it is completed, it will be the seventh in the United States and the largest in the world. It is also the first at a historically black college or university. Its research leg is the Center for Advanced Medical Instrumentation at Hampton University (HU). The research group has earned at least nine patents for cancer detection and treatment devices. The school works in conjuction with the Eastern Virginia Medical School, who facilitates the clinical rotations for the HU graduate students who are majoring in Medical Physics. The target date to begin treating patients is August 2010.
Development
After hearing AbOUT the benefits of proton therapy in a conversation with an alumnus, HU's President William Harvey began investigating the posibility of developing a proton center. Several months later, he appointed Dr. Cynthia Keppel as the head of the team to explore the viability of such a center.
