Hail the Utah Aggies
Hail the Utah Aggies is the fight song of Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Written in 1932 by alumnus **Larry E. Smith** (Class of 1933), the song has served as the university's official fight song for more than ninety years. It is performed by the Utah State University Aggie Marching Band at athletic events, pep rallies, and commencement ceremonies.
History
Larry E. Smith composed both the lyrics and music for Hail the Utah Aggies in 1932 while studying music at the Agricultural College of Utah, now Utah State University. The song quickly became a rallying anthem for Aggie athletics, debuting publicly at a football game later that year.
The tune reflects the institution's agricultural heritage and incorporates Utah State's school colors, blue and white. The opening fanfare is traditionally accompanied by the waving of Aggie scarves and the raising of the Block “A” symbol by students and alumni.
Lyrics
The official lyrics are:
Hail the Utah Aggies, We’ll play the game with all our might. See the colors flying, The Aggie blue and fighting white!
How they stir us onward! We’ll win the victory all tonight— The Aggies, the Aggies, Fight, fight, fight!
Traditions
During football games at Maverik Stadium, the marching band performs the song after every Aggie touchdown and at the conclusion of the game, win or lose. Fans traditionally raise one arm to form an “A” during the phrase “Aggies, fight, fight, fight!” The song is also performed by the Aggie Marching Band during the annual “True Blue” events and at graduation ceremonies, symbolizing unity and pride among students and alumni.
In popular culture
The melody of Hail the Utah Aggies was featured in regional television broadcasts of Aggie football games during the 1980s and continues to serve as the university's audio identity in promotional materials and highlight reels.
