Haakon VIII's swearing as King of Norway

The new King of Norway, Haakon VIII, will take his formal oath of allegiance to the Constitution on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT). The ceremony will take place in the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament) following the death of his father, King Harald V, on August 28, 2026. According to the legislation of the Norwegian constitutional monarchy, although Haakon assumed the duties of head of state automatically and immediately, he must ratify his position through this parliamentary oath.

The Speaker of the Storting, Masoud Gharahkhani, will read the official announcement of the death of Harald V and the corresponding succession to the throne. Later, Haakon VIII will be sworn in to govern the country according to the existing laws and will deliver a brief institutional address. First measures: In his first extraordinary meeting with the Council of State, the 53-year-old monarch confirmed that he will adopt the official name of Haakon VIII and retain the historic family motto: "All for Norway."

Changes in the line of succession

With Haakon VIII's accession to the throne, his wife becomes Queen Mette-Marit. At the same time, their eldest daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, has officially become Crown Princess, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to head the Norwegian line of succession in more than 600 years.
