Gymnasium Querfurt

The Gymnasium Querfurt is a distinguished German High School in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt. It's named after the city of Querfurt and consists of the grades 5 through 12.

The school is considered a sample school by the German federal authorities and is one of the 6 best of the country. Their latest project GQBC brought them another kind of fame.

History

The school was founded in 1991 after the Reunion of the German Federal Republic and the German Democratic Republic. It was not newly build but created through a school fusion of the EOS Querfurt and the Keathe Kolwitz Secondary, which are now the two school buildings. Because of a lot restructuring campaigns of the state of Sachsen-Anhalt's school system the staff members changed from time to time. In summer 2007 the Geiseltal Gymnasium Muecheln was closed because of more and more running out student numbers. This school fusion increased the number of the students at the Gymnasium Querfurt by approximately 200 students.

Class

Class is given in two buildings called "Haus 1" and "Haus 2", whereas Haus 1 is for students from grade 5 through 9 and Haus 2 for students from grade 10 through 12. Subjects from different educational fields are taught. These fields are language and arts, social studies and history, and math and labs. The subject physical education is not considered part of a certain field but is required to take unless you can prove a medical testistomonial or a county decision. In grade 10, 11, and 12 students take subjects with 34 lectures a week (each lecture consists of 45 minutes of class). Every student automatically takes at least one subject of each field if he did fill out his enrollment form correctly at the end of grade 6, 7, 8(partial subject election) and grade 9 and 10(election of all subjects except required core subjects) for following year. Each subject elected is taken until you make a new decision for grade 10 and 11(waving of minor subjects of previous grades) or until graduation. Subjects are subject for change by decision of the student with permission of the school administration up to the fourth week after the school year the decision takes effect started.

Grades

Every grade is sub-numbered with a letter, like "8b". This refers to the home class. Each home class has an own home class teacher that is comparable with a counselor in other High Schools. The students of this home class takes at least all core subject together and are educated by their home class teacher in subjects of at least 4 lectures a week in total.

Grades 11 and 12 are seen as Juniors and Seniors, though it is still in discussion whether the grades 9 and 10 can be called FreshMen and Sophomores. This is still very controversial because grade 9 is considered a Junior High School grade in Germany and so Senior High School begins with grade 10, means it endures just 3 years. On the official Web site of the school the Sophomore grade is named although.

Administration

The school administration consists of the principal Mr. Daeumer, the three cordinatorial counselors, and the two secretaries (one of them in each "Haus"). Besides this the school has got two Network Administrators, a teacher and an appointed student.

The GQBC project

In co-operation with Bluemoon Games the school developed the GQBC project in May 2008, which was in Beta testing and open for invited individuals since July 2008 and open for public from August 30th, the first school day after Summer Break. This project unites the students community on network of 8 and counting servers. Onlie TV, Virtual Classroomstm, music, and the latest news are basic elements. Currently the Network Administration of the school, together with Bluemoon Games, develops a brand new Web hosting service and a download center filled with class materials of teachers but also stuff by students.

School Celebrities

Celebrities at the Gymnasium Querfurt include the yearly School Festival on the day before the very last one of the school year. On this day all projects of the previous week called the "Project Week" are shown to the public. Parents and becoming students of the school are also attending this festival.
