Gunther Eheim
Gunther Eheim is the founder of EHEIM GmbH & Co. KG, a company operating in the domain of aquariums and Contact Air, a company which operates charter flights and caters to business executives.
History
In 1949, Gunther Eheim created enterprises that specialized in the production of toy trains. A centrifugal pump used in the model trains' accessory range was the idea behind the invention of the actual external filter. The first so-called suction filter was developed in 1963. The filter worked this way: the water was sucked into a pot filter, then flowed down through the different filtering medias. Finally, a pump at the pump head would carry the water back out in the aquarium. This principle remains the same until nowadays.
In 1993, Eheim acquired the enterprise Müller & Pfleger GmbH & Co. KG, a German manufacturer of glass aquariums. According to their own data, M&P is the third most important company in the European aquarium market.
In 2003, Eheim also acquired Eugen Jäger GmbH located in Wüstenrot, a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Jäger is recognized for its aquarium heaters. The Jäger heaters were exported until 2003 in America under the name EBO Jäger (EBO stands for Eberhard Böttcher whom, together with Wolfgang Jäger, exported the heaters to the USA).
In 2004, Eheim developed the EHEIM aquatics group.
