Gransden Lodge Radio
During the early part of 1942, a group who had previously been junior script writers and technicians in various regions of the BBC found themselves based at RAF Gransden Lodge near Cambridge, along with two flights of Wellingtons. The men were engaged in radio navigation checking and wireless interrogation, Gransden Lodge is a secluded location, which made the station ideal for these secret activities. The team began writing and performing dramas in order to lift the morale of their some 2000 colleagues on the base. This situation gave the writers not only a captive audience but, as the base contained two WAAF quarters, extra cast, several of the WAAF girls having been involved in theatre and radio in London before World War II.
The team disbanded and the writing stopped when both Wellington Flights at Granseden were moved to Feltwell in April 1943 and the station was passed to Royal Air Force (RAF) No. 8 Group. The team was stationed to other airfields around the Britain and Europe. However, within that year the team managed to create a wealth of quality radio drama scripts, all of which are now unfortunately lost.
