Makaranda means honey. The Bhagavad Gita is sweet and relishing like honey. So this work is entitled Gita Makarandam. Honey is a potent antidote to different kinds of bodily diseases. So also the Gita Makaranda is a powerful purifying agent which washes away the accumulated sins and bestows the supreme bliss of liberation on mankind

The bee collects honey from different flowers. Upanishads are the most beautiful flowers of Divine Knowledge and Lord Krishna drew the honey of the Gita from the Upanishads May the seekers of spiritual truth drew their inspiration and illumination from the Gita and fulfil the purpose of human existence. On the banks of the sacred river Swarnamukhi in Kalahasti (a pilgrim-centre in Andhra Pradesh-India) is situated a peaceful and beautiful hermitage well known as Sri Suka Brahma Ashram. The founder of that Ashram Swami Vidya Prakashananda is a saintly personality working with untiring zeal to spread the message of the Gita through his lectures and publications. He is the author of this illustrious book Gita Makaranda This book contains the text with explanatory introduction, word to word meaning, substance, elaborate commentary and questions and answers. This book was first published in Telugu in 1963. Since then it continued increasingly popular among the Telugu-knowing public A request came to the author from several quarters that his Telugu commentary on the Bhagavad Gita might also be rendered into English for the benefit of the larger non-Telugu knowing public. He has complied with the request and therefore we are enabled to bring out this English version. The meritorious services of Sri Durbha Ramamurty Professor of English, Nellore) need special mention here for his fine rendering of the original into English. We express our sincere thanks to him and to all those who have extended co-operation in publishing this eminent work.

Among the most illustrious of these teachers in modern Indian history is Swami Vidya Prakashananda Giri. Renowned for his deep insight into the science of Yoga and non-dual Vedanta, his monumental masterwork—the Gita Makaranadam—serves as an active, luminous guide for thousands of seekers worldwide.

Now translated and brought to the Spanish-speaking world by Pedro Nonell, an acclaimed scholar of Advaita Vedanta and the lineage of Swami Vivekananda, this commentary provides an accessible path toward spiritual liberation.

A Life Dedicated to Propagating the Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita Swami Vidya Prakashananda Giri (April 13, 1914 – April 10, 1998), was an Indian spiritual guru from Andhra Pradesh. He was a disciple of Malayala Swami. He was the founder of the Sri Sukabrahmashram in Srikalahasti.

His commentary on the Bhagavad Gita called Geetha Makarandam is one of the most notable works of spiritual literature and the philosophy of Yoga.

Gita Makaranadam (Chapters) The Spiritual Mission of Swami Vidya Prakashananda Giri As a teenager, one day when he was crossing the Ganges River, he found the Bhagavad Gita written on some old palm leaves. This coincidence inspired him to propagate the teachings of the Gita throughout his life.

He also translated the Yoga Vasishta into Telugu and the Dhammapada, a Buddhist work from Hindi into Sanskrit and Telugu. The Bhagavad Gita Makarandam was his most notable work. This is a commentary on Bhagavad Gita which he first wrote in Telugu. This book was later translated into Tamil, English, Kannada, Hindi, etc. and now into Spanish by Pedro Nonell.

In 1950 he founded the Sukabrahma Ashram, where as a daily routine, he used to explain the Bhagavad Gita and other Spiritual works to the Ashram seekers.

The Ashram has transformed itself into a center of spiritual learning, having completed 108 Jnana Yajnas of the Bhagavad Gita and as many as 58 symposia on the sacred text.
