Gallery of flags by similarity
This is a gallery of pairs (or larger groupings) of flags that exhibit such similarity in design that they can be difficult to distinguish. They are organized by the number of main colors (disregarding, for example, colors in emblems) in the simplest design of the group. (For flags with a single main color, see Gallery of solid flags.)
In some cases, the similarity between various flags is caused by their having a single origin, with various countries or regions Laying claim to a single political or cultural heritage which is expressed in a flag of a particular shape or colors. Such are, for example, the many similar Arab flags with the colous red, green, white, and black in various combinations, all going back to the flag of the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule; and the various tricolors derived from the flag of France. The similarity between the flags of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador derives from their having all been parts of the short-lived Gran Colombia and adopting variations of its flag.
In other cases, however, completely unconnected political developments in different parts of the world have led to the adoption of astonishingly similar flags â though the colors might have completely different significance for the countries involved.
