Female (gender)

Female gender pertains to characteristics that emerge from the social, psychological, cultural and behavioral experience of being a woman or girl, such as gender roles and/or gender identity and sociocultural constructs related to biological characteristics. This distinction is commonly known as the sex and gender distinction. Female gender identity and the gender expression of females can be understood to exist on spectrums that may include gender binaries and gender neutrality, and may be protected from discrimination by law in some jurisdictions.
Social construction
Social constructions of female gender have varied across societies and over time. The social construct of the female gender often includes expectations and norms of femininity, but this varies; for example, tomboys and butch women have elements of masculine gender expression.
Psychological experience
Female gender roles may be associated with psychological stress and conflict.
