Fairsharemusic
fairsharemusic is a Download To Own music service that combines legal downloads with charitable donations. It is similar to other popular legal download sites, but donates half the profit from every download to charity
Fairsharemusic launched with the backing of a number of charities including Amnesty International, British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross, Centrepoint, Friends of the Earth, Great Ormond Street Hospital, NSPCC, Oxfam, Sue Ryder Care, Teenage Cancer Trust and World Wide Fund for Nature.
Background
fairsharemusic was set up in June 2010 by Lee Cannon and Jonny Woolf to encourage legal downloads and support charity fundraising. An estimated 10 billion tracks have been downloaded illegally in the UK since 2004 - if these tracks had been bought through fairsharemusic it would have raised around £300m for charity
It uses the models of embedded generosity and micro-donations to add a philanthropic element to online music downloads and has been described as 'iTunes with a heart'. As well as generating donations, it provides charities with an effective way of reaching a broader demographic that is increasingly spending time online.
Features
- Extensive music library of 8.5 million tracks
- Tailor-made playlists by music industry professionals
- Digital locker for multiple downloads of paid-for tracks.
Charity donation
For an album costing £7.99, fairsharemusic makes a donation of 32p.
