Eugene S. Eason

Eugene S. Eason (May 28, 1928 - March 25, 2007) was a businessman from Springhill who ran as a Republican in four elections for the Louisiana House of Representatives in calendar year 1991. He won the special election runoff on March 23 for a 9-month unexpired term from District 10, encompassing all of Webster Parish in northwestern Louisiana.

Eason defeated Patti Lou Cook Odom of Minden, the seat of Webster Parish, 3,659 to 3,309 votes. Odom, the daughter of a radio station owner and the wife of a parish police juror, had been elected in 1987 to the Democratic State Central Committee. Eason, however, lost the regular general election on November 16 by seventy-one votes to the Democrat, Everett Doerge, a retired school administrator from Minden. Doerge received 8,389 votes to Eason's 8,318. Eason was the only Republican since Reconstruction ever to have held this particular legislative seat. He was particularly known for his efforts in promoting economic and highway expansion in his area.

Eason was born in Clarks, a lumbering town in Caldwell Parish, to Fulton Fillmore Eason and the former Jewel Parker, but he lived most of his life in Springhill, where he managed a chemical company. Prior to his legislative service, Eason was a Springhill City Council member from 1966-1970 and 1987-1991. He was a member of the Webster Parish Library Board from 1975-2006. He was a member of the Louisiana Highway 7 Corridor Commission and the North Webster Parish Industrial Board. He was a member of Rotary International and the Central Baptist Church of Springhill.

Eason died in Shreveport. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years, the former Frances Smith (September 29, 1928 - January 8, 2006). He was survived by two sons and two daughters. The Easons are interred in Springhill Cemetery.
