Emma Thomson (Scottish footballer)
Emma Thomson (born 27 August 2007) is a Scottish footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Scottish Women's Premier League club Heart of Midlothian. She previously played for Hamilton Academical and Spartans, and has had two loan spells with Motherwell. Thomson won the SWPL Player of the Month award in February 2024 at the age of 16, becoming its youngest recipient. She has represented Scotland at under-16 and under-17 level.
Club career
Hamilton Academical and Spartans
Thomson came through the ranks at Hamilton Academical and established herself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper at the age of 16.
In February 2024, Thomson played as Hamilton defeated Motherwell 2–1 and drew 1–1 with Spartans. She faced 16 shots across the two matches, including four one-on-one or point-blank attempts, and was named the SWPL Player of the Month. Sky Sports described the 16-year-old as the youngest recipient of the award.
Thomson left Hamilton after the 2023–24 season and joined Spartans ahead of the following campaign.
Heart of Midlothian
On 12 July 2025, Heart of Midlothian announced the signing of Thomson from Spartans on a contract until 2027.
She joined Motherwell on a season-long loan on 8 August 2025, but was recalled by Hearts on 11 September because of injuries among the club's goalkeepers. Thomson returned to Motherwell on loan on 17 January 2026 until the end of the season. Hearts exercised another recall option on 23 April after further injuries in their squad. She made seven league appearances for Motherwell across the two spells.
On 13 August 2026, Thomson signed a new Hearts contract running until the summer of 2028.
International career
Thomson has made three appearances for Scotland at under-16 level and seven at under-17 level. She was included in the Scotland under-17 squad for the second round of qualification for the 2024 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship in March 2024.
In November 2025, Thomson was called into the Scotland under-19 squad for the first round of qualification for the 2026 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship.
