EGG-energy is a for-profit company operating in the energy sector in Tanzania. The company connects low-income households to electricity by offering a service that uses rechargeable, portable batteries.
Formerly known as EGG-tech, the company was founded as EGG-energy by MIT and Harvard students in 2008 and has its roots in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Team EGG-energy won the Harvard Business Plan Contest’s Social Enterprise Track in 2009 and attracted attention from several investor groups in the U.S. EGG-energy is currently operating its first battery stations near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
90% of Tanzania’s 40 million inhabitants lack access to electricity. Tanzanian government has invited private investment to support the national power company Tanesco in expanding the accessibility of electricity for households. EGG-energy’s service is a micro scale solution that serves the bottom-of-the-pyramid households.
The CEO of EGG-energy is Dr. Jamie Yang. The company is based in Delaware and operates a subsidiary in Dar es Salaam.
