Edward Deegan

Edward “Teddy” Deegan was marked for death by the Mafia in 1965 for several burglaries that he committed with Whitey Bulger's future partner, Stephen Flemmi. Deegan was told a story about a bank burglary in Chelsea by his friend Wilfred Roy French. When Deegan and the other “robbers” arrived in the alley, he was gunned down by, among others, his friend French and hitmen Joe Barboza and Stevie’s brother Jimmy the Bear Flemmi. Two years later, Barboza broke with the Mafia and decided to bring down everyone he wanted to settle a score with, even if they weren’t LCN. Four innocent men, as well as two of the real shooters, were convicted on Barboza’s perjurious testimony at a sensational 1968 trial. The FBI, although it knew the four were being framed, said nothing. Two of the innocent men died in prison after serving almost 30 years, and the other two were finally released in the mid-1990’s.
