Drew Scott (News 12)
Drew Scott is a former News 12 Long Island television news-anchor and reporter who helped pioneer Long Island television news as it exists today . He grew up in southern California and began a career in radio and television news that has spanned over four decades, in 1970. While on his honeymoon on the island of Bermuda, he acquired his first broadcasting job at tv station ZBM, reporting news and weather for the island. He came to Long Island in 1972, and began working at WGBB/1240 AM in Freeport Long Island. He has been both news-anchor and reporter for various other Long Island radio stations, including WYFA, and WLIR. He later worked as an anchor for WOR-TV channel 9. And then as an anchor, news director and transportation reporter for WPIX-TV. While at WPIX, he helped launch the Independent Network News, where he served as the White House/Washington correspondent and as a national correspondent. Scott has also spent time as a New York Correspondent for NBC, MSNBC, and WNBC-TV.
In the early 1980s he was News Director/Bureau Chief of LI News Tonight at New York Institute of Technology where he taught communications and broadcast journalism, nurturing many current reporters, anchors and news executives serving in the New York market.
In 1985 he became anchor and founding news director at WLIG TV55 . Before April 1985 when News 55 launched, there was no other Long Island specific news station or concentrated coverage since the demise of WSNL-TV (channel 67, now WFTY), which was merged with Newark, New Jersey-based independent WWHT-TV (channel 68, now WFUT) several years earlier. Scott was quoted in a New York Times article AbOUT the new media outlet stating, ''Any start-up business is a gamble but I think we've got a sure shot in this case. There's a real hungry audience on Long Island.'' And right he was. On December 15, 1986, News 12 Long Island emerged with 24 hour news coverage competing with the smaller, grass roots programs of WLIG-TV.
He joined the News 12 Long Island team in 1997 as an anchor and reporter. On September 24, 2017 he announced his retirement from News 12.
