Doug Kaplan

Douglas Kaplan is known as Doug to close associates and friends beginning from his college years until eventually working as a lawyer, management official and currently a senior vice president of a top-notch company.

Douglas Kaplan is currently the senior vice president for business affairs and development of Sirius Satellite Radio Station, a leading provider of 120 digital radio programs being broadcast across the United States. Directly reporting to the radio station’s president, Alan Greenstein, Doug Kaplan is tasked to oversee the development and implementation of business strategies that are vital for the Sirius Radio’s continued lead in the satellite radio business, as reported in the radio station’s website in 2004. Doug Kaplan has spent already 10 years in the company since being hired as a general counsel of the firm in 1999. Kaplan was then appointed vice president for business affairs of Sirius Radio before being appointed to the current position in 2004.

As vice president, Kaplan was credited with signing an agreement with the Sound Exchange in 2003 where Sirius Satellite Radio was given rights to play music by artists signed up with Sound Exchange in return for paying royalties to the latter, a news report said in 2003. Before entering Sirius Satellite Radio Station, Douglas Kaplan worked as an associate at the prestigious Cravath, Swaine and Moore LLP law firm after graduation until 1999. According to its website, the law firm has been in existence since 1819 and has represented big companies and notable personalities in various patent, business, and libel cases since the 19th century. It is based in New York although it has a branch office in London for its European operations. As an associate, Doug Kaplan had the opportunity to work in different departments of the law firm, which may account for his wealth of experience in legal and management affairs.

As reported in a 2001 Cornell University press release, Doug Kaplan also worked as president of the Lakeland Prowlers hockey team of the Southern Hockey League from 1995-1996. Along with his sister, Emily and parents Barbara and Leslie, Doug co-owned the Florida-based team for some time. Douglas Kaplan inherited his interest in sports management from his father Leslie, who was once a board member of the Hockey Hall of Fame that selects hockey players to elevate to sport’s pantheon of great players based on achievements, games won, and level of experience. Doug Kaplan had a distinguished academic record and active involvement in alumni affairs. After graduating with liberal arts degree at Cornell University, he became vice president for fundraising of his Class of 1988, aside from serving in the university’s student council and its alumni athletics council. Kaplan also supports members of Cornell University’ men’s hockey and women’s lacrosse teams in addition to funding the Class of 1988 Scholarship Fund. Doug Kaplan took up law at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated cum laude in 1993.

University of Pennsylvania, where Kaplan studied law, is known for its distinguished history in legal education. Even before the establishment of the law school, the university has already seen James Wilson, A Declaration of Independence signer, deliver a law lecture in 1790. As posted in its website, the law school had seen several milestones ever since its establishment in 1850 such as admission of females and blacks as students and faculty members during the time when the clamor for more liberal policies was growing.

Douglas Kaplan belonged to a family of academics, businessmen and philanthropists as reported in Cornell University website. His mother Barbara was a creative director for an advertising agency before establishing her own firm. Doug’s father, Leslie used to own an advertising agency involved in maintaining billboards along highways and bridges in Pennsylvania and New Jersey states. Leslie is also involved in alumni affairs in Rider University, where he is an alumnus. Doug’s sister, Emily, used to work as marketing-level official for Philadelphia Phantoms, Earl Palmer Brown, Lakeland Prowlers and served as marketing consultant for three organizations. In addition, the Kaplans are also involved in philanthropic enterprises. As mentioned earlier, Douglas has been providing financial support for the Cornell University’s alumni and sports pursuits. His mother, Barbara had established in her name in 1988 a scholarship fund, in partnership with Cornell University, which aims at supporting students needing financial assistance. She has also funded the establishment of a Jewish studies center and an art museum in the university. Barbara Kaplan also helped start a family fund, which is aimed at supporting Cornell alumni. This was also supported by the Cornell School of Industrial relations. Beginning in 2001, the Kaplan's have provided financial supported for the Cornell University’s Public Service Center’s faculty fellowship and distinguished lecture programs. These initiatives were aimed at encouraging faculty innovation and student participation in teaching civic involvement. The program calls for inviting distinguished speakers to talk about their accomplishments while also awarding grants to faculty members who have initiated improvements in the civic program. Several faculty members and speakers have been the recipients of the programs

Douglas, Emily and Barbara Kaplan are all alumni of Cornell University. Douglas graduated pre-law in 1988 while Emily finished her bachelor’s degree in 1991 at the School of Human Ecology. Their mother, Barbara apparently started the family tradition of studying at the Cornell University when she finished her degree in industrial relations in 1959. Their father Leslie was the only non-Cornell alumni in the family, since he had graduated from Rider University.

Doug Kaplan’s successful career began as a pre-law student at Cornell University. He graduated Cum Laude and moved on to become an associate at a prestigious law firm in New York. His brings with him rich business management experience when he became the vice president of a leading radio station in the country.
