Technology

Speech recognition is not new technology. For many years technologists have delivered speech recognition solutions to healthcare that would place a physician at a workstation dictating their patient encounter. After hours of training and fine tuning the software, the speech recognition would present an automatic interpretation of what the physician said and then the physician, knowing what s/he really said, would edit the results to create the document. Often, this method of applying speech recognition required too much from the physician and the solutions ultimately failed.

Dolbey’s solution offers the advantage of speech recognition without requiring the physician to change practice patterns or to learn clerical skills. The Fusion Voice, Text and Speech platform utilizes the newest speech recognition advancements to aid the function of transcription to deliver a fast return on investment while satisfying the need of the physician and the healthcare enterprise alike. The physician may not even be aware that the speech recognition technology is being deployed.

The solution is offered in three components. Fusion Voice is a digital dictation capture system that can meet the needs of every dictator. Deploying standard telephones, wireless devices or specially designed equipment this solution records the dictated notes of any physician in any area of medicine. Fusion Text is a document creation and management platform that delivers the dictations to in-house or remote transcriptionists who type the dictations directly into an industry standard Microsoft Word document. The documents are managed, printed, emailed, faxed, and integrated with other HIS platforms for storage and retrieval.

The newer third component to the platform is Fusion Speech, a speech recognition technology developed in partnership with Royal Philips Electronics. Philips develops a speech recognition technology for healthcare that focuses on the mass production of documents and has quickly become the market leader with over 80% market share in Europe. Fusion Speech incorporates this same technology adapted for US healthcare. By taking the recordings of the physician and processing the voice through speech technology for presentation to the transcription, the transcriptionist, serving as an editor, completes the document. The editing performed by the transcriptionist continually adapts and trains the speech recognition technology to each individual physician’s dictation style. The results are a greatly reduced transcription effort.

The Fusion Voice, Text and Speech solutions can be implemented individually for those that require only a portion of this solution or implemented completely for a totally integrated solution that offers the ability to manage voice capture, document management and speech recognition in one singular platform. The Dolbey design and implementation team can provide the client services and on-site consulting to manage customer expectations and experience based upon industry best practices.
