Dober Chemical Corporation
Dober Chemical Corporation, operating as Dober, is an American specialty chemicals manufacturer headquartered in Woodridge, Illinois. Founded in 1957, the company produces engine coolant additives, water treatment chemicals, and related industrial products, with manufacturing operations in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Dober also offers various products for commercial laundries, including operations software and robotics.
History
Dober Chemical was founded in 1957 by John F. Dobrez Jr. in a rented building on the South Side of Chicago, with an initial inventory of one 55-gallon drum of liquid paint remover. The company's early business consisted of cleaning compounds and paint strippers; during the 1960s its product lines expanded to include iron phosphates and industrial cleaners.
After exiting the paint stripper business to focus on environmentally oriented chemistry, Dober established a wastewater treatment division in 1982, producing oil demulsifiers, polymers, and flocculants. In the years that followed it added a cooling system division, clean-in-place equipment and detergents for the pharmaceutical industry, and a commercial laundry chemical division. Dober entered the commercial laundry marketplace in 1988 and acquired Total Textile Technologies from U.S. Chemical in 1993. In late 2003, Dober's Glenwood Division acquired the Transportation Coolant Aftermarket business of GE Water Technologies (formerly GE Betz), which manufactured products for corrosion, scale, cavitation, and deposit control in the cooling systems of diesel engines used in trucks, locomotives, marine ships, and heavy equipment; the transaction was announced in January 2004. In 2005, Dober began focusing on time-released solid chemistry for cooling towers.
Dober remains a family-controlled company in its third generation. Five of founder John F. Dobrez Jr.'s seven children have been ACTIVE in the company's leadership.
Operations
Dober operates multiple product lines covering coolant additives, wastewater treatment, cooling towers, pharmaceutical cleaners, data center coolants, and other related specialty chemistry.
Acquisitions and divestitures
In September 2010, Ecolab Inc. acquired Dober Chemical's Commercial Laundry Division. The acquisition included Dober's wash-floor chemistry, wastewater treatment formulas, and Ultrax dispensing businesses, together with an exclusive partnership covering key components of Spindle's monitoring software. The divested unit had reported approximately $37 million in sales in 2009, and 56 of its employees transferred to Ecolab.
In 2015, Dober announced a partnership with Global Green Products LLC, a developer of biodegradable scale, corrosion, salt, and iron sulfide inhibitors for the oil and gas industry, to develop a solid product and feeder system applying Dober's controlled-release technology to GGP's green polymer chemistry for produced-water treatment in oil wells. In November 2021, Dober acquired Global Green Products' polyaspartate scale-inhibitor patent portfolio, which forms the basis of its Aspartyl product line, through an assignment of interest recorded with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
In March 2016, Dober acquired the HaloKlear product line from HaloSource Inc., adding chitosan-based biopolymer flocculants used in construction stormwater treatment, mining, environmental remediation, industrial, and oil and gas water treatment to its GreenFloc water treatment portfolio.
In February 2026, Dober acquired the Soltellus agronomy and water treatment businesses from Lygos, a sustainable specialty chemicals company. The transaction transferred Lygos's high-performance polymer product line in those segments to Dober, which announced it would continue production at a facility in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.
Spindle Technologies
Spindle Technologies is a commercial-laundry software subsidiary of Dober. Building on Dober's long-standing role as a supplier of chemical products to the laundry industry, Spindle was launched in 2007 as a software platform intended to help laundry operators manage workflows and consolidate operational data. Spindle's platform collects production, labor, and equipment data from laundry plants and presents it to operators through a real-time dashboard. As part of its 2010 transaction with Ecolab, Spindle entered an exclusive licensing agreement with Ecolab covering its Chemwatch Software technology and OPTRAX Utility Module for the commercial-laundry market, while retaining its independent "Direct Labor" real-time monitoring offering.
Spindle subsequently expanded into robotics and artificial-intelligence applications for laundry operations, including a collaboration with Universal Robots announced through industry trade press.
