Devadas Menon
Devadas Menon is an Indian media and communication researcher who works in the area of cyberpsychology, Social media behavior, and Uses and gratifications theory.He also serves as the section Editor for Media Psychology section for the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
Early life and education
Menon was born and raised in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka and graduated from Bangalore university. He earned Masters in Electronic Media from Bangalore university, an MA in communication studies from Manipal University and a Ph.D. in Communication from Bangalore University.
Career
Menon began his academic career as an assistant professor in the Department of Media and Communication at the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) . He later moved to the Space Applications Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), working in the area of mass communication research and science communication.
Research
Menon's work focuses on the social and psychological consequences of new media technologies through the Uses and Gratifications theory. Menon applied Uses and Gratifications theory an studies various social media plaforms and their features. In a 2022 study Menon examined the various motivations for people to upadate Story in social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and identfied mutiple motivations behind updating stories such as self-presentation, social sharing, entertainment, and trend-related expression, and reported age and gender differences in usage patterns. This sudy also explored realtionship between personality traits such as narcisssm and intensity of posting social media stories.
In 2024, Menon proposed a Bumble Motivation Framework, a research based model developed to study users, partcularly emerging adults engagements with dating app Bumble. This framework uses a 5-point Likert scale, where participants indicate their level of agreement from 1 to 5.
Menon, also researched the factors influencing Instagram Reels usage behaviours, motivations behind photo sharing on Instgram and relationship between user motivations and personality traits in Tinder usage.
