Daniel Nisman
Daniel Nisman (born 1986) is an Israeli independent journalist and political commentator on the Middle East. He is the son of Israeli Olympian Dov Nisman.
Early life and emigration to Israel
Daniel Nisman was born in Cleveland Ohio, where he lived until the age of 18. In 2004, he emigrated to Israel as part of the Israel scouts "Garin Tzabar" program.
Military service
In November 2004, Nisman was drafted in the Israeli Defense Forces, where he was accepted into the Nahal infantry brigade's reconnaissance unit. During his service, he participated in the 2005 Gaza disengagement, the 2006 Lebanon War, and counter [...] operations in the West Bank.
Public diplomacy
In 2010, Nisman founded the Friend a Soldier project with Joshua Mintz and Yagil Beinglass. Friend-a-soldier is a non-for-profit organization aimed at promoting dialogue between released IDF soldiers and the Arab world. In 2011, he co-founded United Israel Model United Nations with Katja Knoechelmann, after leading joint Israeli student delegations to MUN competitions abroad.
Journalism
Daniel Nisman currently writes analysis and opinion articles on current events taking place in Israel and the Middle East. His articles and commentary have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Jerusalem Post as well as other Israeli and regional news sources.
Nisman has written extensively on the political and social changes which swept the Middle East following the outbreak of the Arab Spring. Following Egypt's January 25 Revolution, Nisman covered the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood as well as the changing security situation throughout the country. His other focus points in North Africa include Algeria and Libya.
Nisman continues to cover the Syrian conflict, analyzing its impact on Lebanese internal politics and Turkish foreign policy. In addition, he has written several pieces on the political shifts taking place in the Persian Gulf, focusing on current events taking place in Bahrain and Kuwait.
He frequently writes opinion articles on contemporary Israeli politics and foreign policy.
Israel Football League
In 2007, Nisman joined the Israel Football League (IFL) during its inaugural season. In 2008 he became captain of the Tel Aviv Jaffa Sabres, known for its multi-faceted roster of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian players. In 2009, the Sabres claimed their first of two championship titles, defeating the Jerusalem Lions in Israel Bowl III.
