The Background
Damini House of Culture is a continuation of Indian Dance and Culture Center, an organization that was founded in 1986 on the initiative of Shikha Chandra. She had since 1983 run private lessons for a dance group. The idea behind The INDIAN Dance and Culture was to protect the Indian heritage of Indians living in Norway.
The interest in Indian dance proved to be very large, and parents have followed and supported the children who have taken part in dance classes. Over time, the organization has grown larger, and the quality has also improved significantly. The professional Indian dancer and dance teacher Priya Pawar was soon contacted and have the regular workshops helped to raise the dance group on a more professional level.
Students who have been involved since the beginning are now trained to instructors. The dancers say they have learned a lot AbOUT Indian culture through dance and thus had knowledge of the parents' background and culture, and a stronger identity in the Norwegian society. Indian Dance and Cultural Center is now renamed Damini House of Culture. The initiators have with this change, intended to expand the activity and the basin significantly.
