Daily Planet (Homeless Rehabilitation Service)

The Daily Planet, based in Richmond, Virginia, is a non-profit organization that helps to enrich and empower and aid Richmond's homeless community. The focus of The Daily Planet is to provide a variety of service to the homeless, uninsured and under insured members of the Richmond community. It provides a variety of services such as primary health care, behavioral healthcare, job training and a variety of daily services. The Daily Planet has been serving the Richmond community since 1969.

History of The Daily Planet

The Daily Planet is a non-profit 501(3)(c) organization that was founded in 1969 by Anne Lane. The Daily Planet is known as a leader in provision of services to the Greater Richmond homeless population.

Services Offered

The Daily Planet offers a variety of services to the homeless, uninsured and under-insured.

Physical Health

Health services are provided by through four clinics. Dr. Dianne Reynolds-Cane, M.D. serves as the medical director of the healthcare center.

Medical Clinic

The Daily Planet's medical clinic service providers include licensed healthcare practitioners specializing in the following services. Services and treatments provided:

  • Comprehensive history and physicals
  • Gynecology and PAPS
  • Lab Testing
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease testing and treatment
  • Substance abuse and mental health referral
  • Adolescent physicals
  • Radiology referral
  • HBP and Diabetes testing and treatment
  • HIV testing and counseling

Behavioral Health Clinic

The behavioral health clinic is staffed by licensed mental health clinicians. Services and treatments provided:

Eye Care Clinic

The Daily Planet offers an eye care clinic. Services and treatments provided:

The Daily Planet is staffed by a licensed dentist. Services and treatments provided::

Other supportive services

Medical Respite

The Daily Planet operates and maintains a medical respite program to provide convalescent care to medically frail homeless discharged from the hospital. The facility features 20 beds and a 24 hour staff to provide recuperative care to recovering patients. Patients are accepted by referral from Central Intake staff, social workers, nurses, health providers and health system discharge planners.

Project STRIVE

Project STRIVE, is an acronym of Strengthening, Teamwork, Responsibility and Independence Via Employment. STRIVE is a 12-week job training which trains individuals in such fields as work behavior, financial management, job readiness and resume writing. After completion of STRIVE individuals are placed in internships and employment programs.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven is a 6,700 square-foot facility operated by The Daily Planet. Safe Haven is a supportive housing facility for homeless individuals diagnosed with a severe mental illness. This shelter provides facilities and support services for those enrolled in the program. Safe Haven offers its' residents: bedrooms, baths, a kitchen, dining area, a meeting room,a laundry and recreational area. The facility serves as temporary residency until occupants have self sufficient and acquired living facilities.

Case Management Services

Case Management

The Daily Planet has case managers on staff who work with clients to assess and guide their pat to self sufficiency. They provide counseling and support as well as work with local resources available. The following are offered at The Daily Planet's facility as a part of their case management.
