Daddysmilk

Daddysmilk is a Norwegian band founded in 1998 in the suburbs of Bjørndal, located in Oslo. The band is known for their underground live shows, growing in popularity throughout the Oslo region.

Music and influences

Daddysmilk's has a varied musical spectrum, with influences including modern alternative rock, punk and pop. Their music also incorporates elements from swing jazz, musicals and traditional Norwegian folk music. Lately, Daddysmilk have strayed from their riff-based roots, and moved into more chord-based song structuring, while maintaining a heavy focus on melody and vocal harmonies. They music usually gets compared to Tool, System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, and early My Chemical Romance.

All of the members collaborate in terms of songwriting, though the main contributors seem to be Øystein Sootholtet and Marius Aasan

Daddysmilk has shown little apprieciation for the focus of the underground musical scene in Oslo, citing it as "biased", and "without international appeal". Daddysmilk has regularily remarked sharply to mainstream underground music establishments in Norway, like Norwegian Broadcasting's Urørt, or the annual norwegian By:Larm event, stating they have yet to produce any moderately successful music act outside of norwegian borders.

Name

Daddysmilk stated on their show at Café Fiasco, at October 19. 2007, that they plan to change their bandname, after a lot of pressure from various producers and their current manager, David Søderholm. Suggestions to their new name include "The Arch Doxies", "Paint the Nation", "[...] the Torpedoes" (supposedly after the Tom Petty album of the same name.) and "The Scarlet Saints". Chris Ziegler and Marius Aasan also discussed a YouTube poll to determine a new band name, as well as a publicity stunt. The suggested name "The Danger!" was scrapped, because the name "sucked" according to Chris Ziegler

Popularity

Daddysmilk has gained a moderate fanbase in the Oslo area, as the word spread around their live performances, as well as a steadily increasing online fanbase. Their international fanbase has strongest roots in the United States, Singapore and Japan, thanks to good chart positions and good reviews on the American websites Garageband.com, and IACmusic.com.

Lyrics

Lyrics in Daddysmilk songs focus on storytelling, with dark or morbid themes of fatality and death, as well as [...] tendencies. Recurring references to names like Aaron, Jackie, Lucy and Susie have yet to see a resolution in a grand plot, melting together the stories of these characters.

The Norwegian Championship of Rock

Daddysmilk won the second place after a much disputed final in the 2003 Norwegian Championship of Rock, a Norwegian equivalent of the "Battle of the Bands". At the time, there were rumours of a rigged jury, namely two members of Stonegard, who had close connections to the winning band Mistress (YTO after 2004). The band gained much publicity in Norwegian national press, being one of the youngest to participate in the competition with such great success.

Shell Economy Marathon in France

Daddysmilk made a surprise appearance at the Nogaro Motorway Circuit in France in May 2006. They supported the event by playing two shows on the 25th and 26th of May.
