Culturedeluxe

Culturedeluxe.com or CDX is a UK based online music magazine currently run by Richard Brown. The site is an editorially independent music website.

History

Culturedeluxe has been run by editor, Richard Brown since 2005 but was launched three years earlier in 2002 under the name ‘Excalibur Music Store’. It was originally designed as a means for unsigned bands and producers to link up the MP3 files they have placed on their site to a central database and there was also an emphasis placed on featuring various mashup singles and bootlegs. The site described itself as an on-line directory of bedroom producers and many of its journalists came from these "[...] pop" beginnings.

However, in 2005 the focus of the site shifted to become a more traditionally styled music website featuring news, reviews and commentary alongisde other features such as interviews and thought pieces. After building up an established readership the site re-launched in its current form with a brand new look and navigation system in January 2008. Despite featuring articles and reviews on established artists, Culturedeluxe has the main focus of its features, news items and reviews on alternative, left-field and altogether less mainstream artists.

Culturedeluxe makes use of a freelance journalist team with most of the contributers from London, though it has contributers from two continents with writers from as far afield as the USA and Germany. Despite its central London presence the site is run from Aberdeen and the site exists through the contributions from its unpaid writers. Due to the nature of the journalism on the site there are opportunities for anyone to contribute and the articles also have an integrated forum to allow for discussion and comments on interviews, news and reviews.

There is also an extensive A-Z archive of artists who have been featured on the site that gives a detailed description of the bands to give a rough idea of their sound and history, as well as providing convenient links to any recent review or news piece to feature them.

Record label

A record label was launched in 2007 by Nick Foster, itself taking over from Prank Monkey Records which had a longstanding relationship with the Culturedeluxe site and originally specialised in cheeky bootleg releases. The label has released recordings by:

  • BigBadBadz
  • Poj Masta
  • Tauchseider
  • Younghusband
